Research Integrity

ETHI 80490A
The workshop is based on a conception of research integrity and misconduct as socially constructed. Standards of research integrity vary from time to time, from place to place, and from one academic field to another. Some forms of misconduct are obvious and extremely serious. However, other forms can fall into a "grey zones" where it is not always easy to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Researchers can be both perpetrators and victims of research misconduct. As such, they need to be able to acknowledge this misconduct and be aware of possible courses of actions in response to it. The workshop will also discuss the pressures of the academic 'system' (e.g., rules for tenure and promotion, pressures for publication) that might create conditions where misconduct becomes tempting. The workshop aims to create awareness of these risks and address ways of dealing with them ethically and responsibly.
