Geopolitical Risks and International Affairs

This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to the geopolitical risks involved in international business by focusing on multinational firms and the changing global geopolitical environment in which they operate. There are two main objectives for the course: (1) equip students theoretical with and empirical knowledge on geopolitical risks and their repercussions on the international business since 1945; (2) develop students' skills in predicting geopolitical risks. Topics include international anarchy, the hierarchy of states' economic powers, cyber geopolitics and digital threats, the role of international institutions, and the distinction between relative and absolute gains, as well as economic sanctions, natural resources, and international standards.

The system of international economic order in which multinational firms operate
Inter-state anarchy and the geostrategic balance of the major powers that dictate international trade relations
The impact and role of international institutions vis-à-vis analyzing the geopolitical risks on which multinational companies base their decisions
The evolution of cyber geopolitics and digital threats in the decision-making architecture of multinational firms
The redefinition of economic diplomacy and the implications for multinational firms
The efficiency of economic sanctions as mechanisms for regulating geopolitical risks
