Learning & Innovation through Theories of Organizational Behavior

MNGT 80420A
The seminar pays special attention to meso-level studies, which explore multiple layers of organizational behavior concurrently. Focus is put on understanding and advancing theory. The goal is to help students move beyond merely linking variables to developing a deeper comprehension of the underlying mechanisms that connect these variables. This is particularly crucial when these mechanisms operate across different analytical levels. The seminar thus explores a diverse range of mechanisms, constructs, and multi-level research domains. It is structured to first familiarize students with the basics of research and theory building, before diving into eight core and emerging OB theories. These theories include social cognitive theory, goal orientation theory, trait activation theory, construal level theory, social identity theory, impression management theory, upper echelons theory, and paradox theory. Towards the end of the seminar, we will examine OB studies that have successfully integrated theories from other disciplines.
