Multinational Enterprises, Development and Policy

ECON 60017A
We will discuss the impact of MNEs on development. (1) The course begins with the literature on foreign direct investment (FDI) and its effects on economic structure and industrial development. This involves assessing the impact of MNEs and FDI on the processes and outcomes of economic and sustainable development through the creation of innovative capacities. (2) The course engages in a discussion of the impact of MNEs on development through their other (i.e. excluding FDI) global activities, such as the creation of social value. The course challenges traditional assumptions and controversies about development and MNEs. (3) The course addresses the development of policies aimed at attracting MNEs by critically examining the policy instruments available to developing countries and engaging students in the process of building a policy case on FDI to attract MNEs that will be successful in terms of their contribution to economic and sustainable development.
